Crossing Guards
This year, we are continuing our crossing guard program. Our pilot program last year was an enormous success; students and parents ranked the safety at intersections and our crossing guards as one of their primary motivations to let children walk to school.
We are currently staffing four intersections near CFIS: Philomethian at Bell, Philomethian at Washington Street, Washington Street at Main Street and Washington Street at South Franklin. Our program is modeled on the program in Alliance Ohio. You can check out their web page by clicking here.
Throughout the year, the Chagrin Falls Police Department and Safe Routes Chagrin continue to actively recruit adult volunteer crossing guards to help improve safety for students walking to school. We need your help! If we cannot maintain a steady group of volunteers, the program will not survive. Please consider giving 30 minutes out of your day to this important task. You might even consider sharing a shift with your spouse, covering a position every morning between the two of you.
Here are the details:
Crossing guards will be positioned at key intersections near the Intermediate School. Shifts are 30 minutes a day, M-F: 7:45 – 8:15 am and 3:15 – 3:45 pm. Training and equipment will be provided by the Chagrin Falls Police Department. The program manager is Kathryn Garvey and the police contact is Officer Amber Dacek. If you or anyone you know would like more information, please email us at saferouteschagrin@yahoo.com . Our current group of guards is very diverse – with active retirees, moms, dads and college students taking shifts that work with their schedule. We welcome all applicants!
To apply to be a volunteer crossing guard, download the Crossing Guard Application and drop it off at the Police Station.
