Walk To School
Fun Fitness Fair Photos
Many local business and support groups helped in our Fun Fitness Fair at Riverside Park. Here are photos of a few!
October was Walk to School Month – and Chagrin Falls Schools decided it was the perfect month to jump start the kidsMoveSmart program with a month long walking contest. Safe Routes Chagrin helped kick off their “Tiger Tour” by getting many of the kids in the district to earn some extra mileage with on our annual Walk to School Day festivities! Here’s what we had in the line up:
Tiger Stadium Activities
Walking Teams and individuals gather at the Intermediate School parking lot by 6:50 am to walk to Chagrin Tiger Stadium with teachers. They go to the registration table to get a raffle ticket and a GlowStick flashlight. Once at the school, they redeem their ticket at the concession stand for an Einstein’s bagel and hot chocolate. Student Council will present prizes for: 1) Most Spirited Team, and 2) Best Team Mascot and 3) Individuals with the most unique/creative outfit. Afterward, kidsMoveSmart presents “Get up and Go” – a fun movement activity for the entire school body.
Chagrin History Scavenger Hunt
Walking Teams meet in the Rec Center parking lot where they deposit their backpacks into cars for transport to the pickup location. Teams walk to town to Township Hall to enjoy a healthy snack before embarking on a scavenger hunt called “Passport to Chagrin 2”. The contest takes the teams around the Village of Chagrin to places of historical importance, from 3:30pm to 4:45pm.
Fun Fitness Fair
CFIS students walk after school to Riverside Park to participate in a Fun Fitness Fair with healthy food, prizes, and many movement related activities & games, including corn hole, Kuk Sul Do, bike drills with Mountain Road Cycles, and a MoveSmart Tiger Tours booth where students can log their miles. For each activity they do, students earn tickets for prizes which the school board and Mr. Woofter will announce during the event. They leave their backpacks under a covered tent at the park and can use restroom facilities at the library. The Valley Lutheran parking lot is used as a place for parents to pick-up children between 5:30 and 6pm.
Students are encouraged to walk in groups to town. Permission slips are required by the school, so students need to submit a permission slip to walk and then be signed-out by their homeroom teacher. During the event, police officers, volunteer crossing guards and REACT team members staff major intersections in Chagrin to provide safety for crossing. Council members, Mayors, Police Chiefs and school board members, school administration and teachers are invited to join the walk in the morning and select prize winners in the afternoon.
Closing Activities and Ceremony
Once finished with the History Scavenger Hunt, teams return to the Intermediate School gymnasium where EarthDay Coalition and the High School Student Council have fun, interactive stations for them to explore. The winners of the Passport contest are announced in the auditorium and lots of prizes are awarded. The Intermediate School parking lot is used as a place for parent pick-up at 6pm.
