What started as a community outreach to get the word out about Safe Routes programs has become an annual tradition. At our town’s annual Blossom Time Carnival, Safe Routes hosts a Cupcake Walk each year. In the style of an old fashioned Cake Walk – but with smaller prizes – we have preschool age children walk on our mock “crosswalks” to music and award a cupcake to the lucky child that ends up on the number called each round by the crossing guard attendant.
While children are involved in this activity, we distribute information on safe walking, safe houses, local cycling and driving tip cards to their parents. We’ve found that it is a nice activity for the young children and gives us the opportunity to spread the word about crosswalk safety and more to an audience that reaches beyond our own Village.
